For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
All of us know precisely what the word desire means. A man desires a women, and NOTHING will stop him from having her. It is like LUST. Actually, this is precisely the word that the KJV uses.
The Greek word here is described as “to set the heart upon” or to , “long for (rightfully or otherwise)”
Paul is writing that your flesh will lust, whether you are reborn or not. He will lust for, long for or desire certain things, whether it is acceptance, love, sexual pleasures and so on. Yet, although my focus had always been, like yours might have been, on stopping this lust, this verse is actually saying something much more profound………..
Your spirit Lusts! Just like your flesh lust after and nothing can stop him/her from having it, your spirit constantly, actively lusts ………….. The presence of God, goodness, kindness, gentleness, patience, peace, etc. Instead of trying to fight the desire of the flesh ………. Throw yourself to the desires of your spirit.
