As humans, we tend to be constantly focussed on death / sin and the negative. It is amazing that even after being purchased as free man we still focus on sin.
James 1:22But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25But the one who looks into the perfect law,the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
The life of a believer is flooded (should be) with the word. We all know precisely what to do. Staying away from sin might be at most 1 thing we can do, but in reality there is sooooooo much more to do. Come on, let’s be honest. If you are a believer the voice of the Holy Spirit is ever speaking to you. YOU KNOW WHAT HE WANTS YOU TO DO!
It is our choice to be doers of the word or just abstainers of sin. Not doing is does not qualify for obedience does it? As a boss, father, partner and husband I know that not doing wrong things does not make me effective.
Not looking at other women for instance will not build my marriage. The mere fact that I am considering another women should cause warning lights to flash. I am obviously not really invested in my relationship with my wife if i am busy with “other women”.
Simply not doing sin does not make you a doer of the word. Praying – because the Bible says : “pray without ceasing” makes you a doer.
Are you an abstainer or doer?
