Yesterday we spoke about the fact that we are mere servants. Some might disagree because somewhere else the Bible says that He does not call us servants anymore. We are His friends. Well, here is the scripture, let’s take a look at it.
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command you
. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends,
for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
You did not choose me, but I chose you and
appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide
, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
YES, we are His friends IF we obey Him! This did not change from the previous scripture. Becoming His friend does not discontinue the obedience. The only difference is that it should be out of LOVE, not slavery.
YES, we are friends, BECAUSE He keeps us up to speed to what the Father said. Knowledge needed to make the things we do understandable. Servants obey without knowledge or understanding. We SERVE / obey Christ and we should understand the purpose and sometimes even more.
YES, we are not enslaved, we are appointed. Slaves are enslaved, friends get appointed. Both work, one accept a position of trust to complete a task, the other are forced to complete the task.
We are no longer slaves, but we should serve Him freely, because He is our friend. If we think becoming His friend makes Him our slave/servant we are completely missing the point of this verse.
